Position Summary

Western Carolina University’s School of Engineering + Technology at Western Carolina University seeks a tenure-track faculty member in Materials Engineering to join a growing university and school. The School of E + T houses multiple programs in Engineering and Engineering Technology (engineering.wcu.edu). These programs have a strong focus on practice, using our focused Project-Based Learning (PBL) core. All of our programs are experiencing significant growth. We offer baccalaureate programs in:

- Engineering with concentrations in Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Electrical Power (Seeking ABET accreditation fall 2017)
- Electrical Engineering (ABET EAC accredited)

- Engineering Technology – Applied Systems (ABET ETAC accredited)
- Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ABET ETAC accredited)

- Masters of Science in Technology

The school is seeking a candidate with one, or more, areas of expertise, listed below. The successful candidate will have a commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and have high potential for applied scholarship based on the Boyer model of scholarship.

Expectations for the position include excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Many tenure-track faculty members pursue scholarship as applied research for companies through the nationally recognized Rapid Center, located in the College of Engineering and Technology. Opportunities for service exist both inside and outside the school, college, and university. Applicants must possess the qualifications to teach at the Bachelors and Masters levels, including thesis supervision and laboratory instruction.

Candidates with extensive practical laboratory and experimental backgrounds are highly desirable, and candidates with experience in more than one area of need will be reviewed favorably. Candidates with academic and industry experience and a demonstrated record of achievement may be considered for appointment at the Associate Professor rank. Areas of need are listed below:

- Composite materials
- Failure analysis of materials
- Material processing and microstructure
- Material characterization and testing
- Advanced materials

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of three years of relevant industry experience are required. A doctoral degree in a field of engineering and/or engineering technology are required. The position is a nine-month tenure-track at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Those seeking advanced rank will need to demonstrate a record of excellence at the academic rank. Responsibilities include instruction, advising, curriculum development, leadership and management of student capstone projects, industry outreach, and engagement with regional business and industry.
