Position Summary

Western Carolina University (WCU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the Forensic Science Program, which is housed in the Department of Chemistry and Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences, starting August 1, 2018. The Forensic Science Program at WCU is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program, offering concentrations in Forensic Biology and Forensic Chemistry.

While a candidate with a chemistry-related background is preferred, applications from candidates with other specializations will be considered. The minimum educational/professional requirement for the position is an earned M.S. in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or a closely related discipline. However, an earned doctorate in the aforementioned fields and/or substantial professional experience in the field of forensic science is preferred.

The successful applicant is expected to primarily develop and teach within the forensic science curriculum. Depending on the applicant’s particular specialization, these course could include Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Biology, Population Genetics, Forensic Toxicology, Forensic Microscopy or Physical Methods in Forensic Science. Depending on background, the successful candidate’s instructional duties may include teaching introductory and/or advanced courses within the Chemistry or Biology programs at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

The successful applicant is also expected to develop and maintain an active research program that attracts extramural funding and actively engages undergraduate students within the forensic science program as well as undergraduate and/or Masters level graduate students in the chemistry and/or biology programs.

The individual will support the ongoing development of the forensic science program by contributing to curriculum development, student advising, etc. Participation in other service activities to the department, college and university is also a general expectation of tenure-track faculty.
