Position Summary

The director’s primary responsibility is the strategic execution and management of a comprehensive annual giving program, including the coordination and oversight of supporting initiatives in the areas of development, alumni and donor relations. He/She develops a coordinated matrix of communication and solicitation strategies involving email, direct mail, phone, personal visitation and volunteer engagement, all focused on shaping a sustainable tradition of annual support.

In addition, he/she will foster the growth of best practices in the supporting areas of gift processing, data management and donor relations as related to annual giving and the University as a whole. The director has a keen appreciation for the foundation of annual giving as the enabling component of successful major and gift planning programs.

The director is responsible for ensuring that the University is a leader among peers as measured externally in terms of total dollars, percentage of participation, consistency of giving and average gift size and internally in terms of clean data, ease of access to data and timely donor stewardship.

The Director of Annual Giving is an EHRA non-faculty, direct fundraising position that reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development.
The director will supervise the Assistant Director of Annual Giving, whose responsibilities include parent and student philanthropy, phonathon solicitations, phonathon staff management, and personal solicitations through a small lead annual giving portfolio.
1. Strategic creation, execution, and management of a comprehensive annual giving program through metrics driven activities to increase total annual dollars, total annual donors, and donor retention.
2. Supervise the Assistant Director of Annual Giving.
3. Maintain a lead annual giving portfolio and directly solicit prospects and donors for increased annual gifts.
4. Create, implement, and manage results for direct mail, email, and online solicitations, special project solicitations, faculty/staff solicitations, and other annual giving programs to various constituents as needed.
5. Create, coordinate, and implement the annual “I Love WCU” campaign in February of each year for students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.
6. Serve as a staff liaison to a volunteer board such as the WCU Foundation Board or the WCU Board of Visitors.
7. Integrate alumni engagement opportunities within larger annual giving plans.
8. Meet and/or exceed established metrics within budget including overall fiscal year annual giving goals, total annual dollars, total annual donors, and donor retention.
9. Coordinate the central activities of the annual giving program for the Division of Advancement and with partnership with alumni, development, advancement services, marketing, and public relations staff, along with senior administration, deans, and faculty leaders.
10. Produce regular reports on the status of annual giving; analyze and interpret data regarding alumni and friends giving to improve solicitation effectiveness.
11. Attend departmental, campaign, college, and university alumni and development functions as appropriate.
12. Work evenings and weekends on occasion, staff Alumni and other campus events, which may directly impact fundraising.
13. Travel occasionally, willingness and ability to work nights and weekends, and be fluency in the various options needed to schedule efficient, safe, and cost effective travel.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required;
Five years of fundraising and/or experience in higher education required;
Strong managerial, leadership and supervisory skills;
Demonstrated organizational and communication skills as well as ability to work with and motivate other development professionals and volunteers;
Demonstrated analytical and fundraising skills with the ability to recognize opportunities, identify critical, high pay-off activities and prioritize them to attain goals;
Excellent skill and understanding of computer and constituent software required;
Experience with data management and segmentation;
Experience using a CRM database system;
Proficient in social media engagement;
Ability to work independently and within a team environment;
Willingness and ability to travel and to work nights and weekends, as required.
