Position Summary

The College of Education and Allied Professions at Western Carolina University invites applications for the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs position. Starting date: July 1, 2018. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Education and Allied Professions, the Associate Dean will be responsible for providing leadership, direction, and administrative oversight for all matters related to academic affairs within the College. The successful candidate will be responsible for overall academic planning, curriculum development and review, accreditation, and assessment. The successful candidate will lead the College in shaping academic policy and practice. Major Duties of Associate Dean of Academic Affairs: *Director of Teacher Education – responsible for advising Dean and managing teacher education program. *Coordinator of accreditation for all professional education programs and oversight of all accreditation activities within the College. Advises and guides college in meeting requirements, completes annual reports, and leads self-study and on-site visit preparations for accreditations. Maintains knowledge of current, relevant professional standards. *Primary person in Dean’s Office for assisting students with academic inquiries and issues resolution. *Chair the Professional Education Council and other relevant college committees as assigned. *Work closely with Director of Assessment and Technology in completing annual and other required reports regarding enrollment, retention and completers for internal and external agencies. *Preside over the implementation of curricular processes and procedures within the College. *Member of CEAP Leadership Council, University Associate Deans Council, Registrar’s Advisory Board, Academic Space Advisory Board, and other groups as assigned. *Work with Director of Assessment and Technology in developing and managing the College’s assessment system. * Teach one three-hour course each semester. *Serve as Department Head of Suite 201, the Student Support Services unit for teacher education. Supervise and collaborate with the Office of Field Experience, teacher education admission, advising, distance education, special programs, licensure, and assessment. * Serve as the primary representative of the College in the absence of the Dean. * Administrative responsibilities related to Allied Professions such as facilitating program review and external partnerships. All other duties as assigned.

As a regional comprehensive university in southern Appalachia, WCU is proud that approximately 30% of its students are first generation college students, and the College plays an integral role in meeting the needs of these students.

The Dean’s Office is the administrative unit over the College of Education and Allied Professions. The Dean’s Office reports directly to the Office for Academic Affairs, which reports directly to the Chancellor’s Office. The College of Education and Allied Professions is one of six undergraduate colleges at Western Carolina University. The college offers programs of study at the baccalaureate, masters, intermediate and doctorate levels. The primary role of the College of Education and Allied Professions is to prepare educators, psychologists, recreation professionals and other human service specialists at both entry and advanced levels to staff public elementary and secondary schools, recreation facilities and other human service organizations in North Carolina. Additional fundamental roles are to serve the general education program of the University and to provide leadership and technical assistance for the improvement of teacher preparation and elementary and secondary schooling in North Carolina, the nation and developing countries. The College also strives to offer degree and non-degree programs and special clinical services that are closely related to the mission of the College and that are needed by western North Carolina and the region beyond. The College attempts to fulfill its mission by creating and nourishing a community of scholarship that promotes and recognizes good teaching, service and research. Of these three scholarly activities, providing optimally effective learning environments for students is more important, followed by service and then research. The guiding principle of this community of scholarship is the belief that the best educational decisions are made after adequate reflection and with careful consideration of the interests and welfare of the persons affected by the decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must hold an earned doctoral degree from an accredited university in an academic major related to one of the College’s program areas and demonstrate a sustained record of research, teaching, and service to substantiate the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor in a Carnegie Master’s Colleges and Universities (larger programs).

In addition, the College of Education is seeking an experienced, innovative academic leader who is able to demonstrate a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking to participate in the development of academic program policies, procedures, and standards as well as the College’s mission, vision, and related strategic plans.

Preferred Qualifications

Additionally, experience in the following is preferred: supervision of faculty and/or staff, a background in K-12 and teacher education, proficiency with the accreditation process, particularly at the college level, but also at the program level (e.g., CAEP, CACREP, NASP, APA, and/or COAPRT).
